Field Training Case Study: Scaling MFS Adoption in Manamela

Following our successful field engagement in Ha Chepeseli, the MADF team continued our Northern outreach with a training session in Manamela, Butha Buthe, where we met a passionate group of farmers ready to transform their agricultural practices and strengthen their livelihoods.

As in the previous site, farmers were introduced to planting potatoes using Machobane Farming System (MFS) principles, including preparing nutrient-rich mixtures of manure and ash. But in Manamela, the momentum went even further—this community is eager to adopt the full MFS approach across their fields.

A Community Ready for Full MFS Implementation

On 19 August 2025, 18 farmers — with more expected to join — expressed their commitment to rolling out the complete seven-crop MFS sequence:

  • Potatoes

  • Maize

  • Beans

  • Sorghum

  • Wheat

  • Pumpkins

  • Peas

They also intend to grow a variety of garden vegetables, including carrots, tomatoes, and green peppers, ensuring both household nutrition and income generation.

The farmers showed deep interest in integrated pest management and climate-resilient techniques that define MFS, and they have requested frequent training sessions to strengthen their skills as they prepare for full implementation.

A Heartwarming Moment of Community

One of the most beautiful moments from the session came after the training, when farmers generously shared a meal prepared with love. We were served motoho (traditional porridge), lekakarane (hard-body chicken), and an array of delicious dishes—an expression of gratitude that reminded us why this work is so meaningful.

It was a simple but powerful gesture of community, hospitality, and connection—the very values that fuel the spirit of MFS.

Beyond Farming: Rebuilding Livelihoods

As with all our MFS initiatives, this work goes far deeper than agricultural training. It is about:

  • Restoring dignity and self-reliance to households affected by poverty.

  • Building resilience to the growing impacts of climate change.

  • Securing year-round food availability through sustainable land management.

  • Strengthening the local economy by increasing production and reducing dependency on external support.

MADF remains committed to walking alongside these communities as they build food security—one field, one family, and one season at a time. 💚
